Christmas in Paris!

Christmas in Paris!
Wouldn't it be fun to hop on a plane and spend the night
in Paris... at Christmas time?

We could walk the streets with a pastry and cafe au late...
pretending we live there!

Look at amazing light displays...

Take pictures and people watch...

Do a little holiday shopping...

Visit fabulous landmarks...

Watch the streets clear as dawn approaches...

Welcome the new day...

And then hop a plane back home!

Wouldn't it be fun!

Blue Mondays

Last week one of my favorite artists, Traci Bautista, had a
blog post which held the question:
"What is inspiring you today?"
My answer at the time was colored glass, and so today's
Blue Mondays post is filled with Blue glass and
hopefully it will inspire you too!
Kobalt Blue Glass Decorative Bowl
I really love blue cut glass...
the way the light hits the angled cuts...
it makes it sparkle and gives it a life of its own.

Vintage Turquoise Blue Glass Powder Jar
This vintage glass powder jar is adorable
and can hold so many things...
jewelry, fortunes from inside fortune cookies or
dark chocolate covered coffee beans!
What would it hold for you?
Blue Glass and Silver Cream Dispenser FREE SHIPPING
I imagine that a blue glass and silver creamer
would look great filled with several of my favorite pens
on my writing desk... if I had a writing desk.
20 Vintage Tin Cut Faceted Royal Blue Glass Beads 8mm
Fabulous blue glass beads are right for any occasion,
especially laundry day... with an old t'shirt, faded
blue jeans and vintage cowboy boots!
Vintage Crownford 2QT Blue Glass Jar - Bless Our House - Made in Italy
This blue glass jar just begs to hold old fashioned
peppermint sticks for creamy hot chocolate sipped
the night before Christmas.
Oooo, I can taste it now!

And so, at the close of this post,
I ask the same of you:
What is inspiring you today?

I love your comments so don't hesitate to
leave one!
Have a fabulously inspired day!!!

Black Friday!

Black Friday Purchase!!

I know, most people ran to the malls and department stores on
Black Friday... but I had something entirely different in mind.
We've been very fortunate in Iowa this year because the weather
has been great.  However, I know from experience that extreme cold is on
its way!  (And has finally arrived!)

And so, remembering last year and getting snowed in several times,
I wanted to make sure I had a nice studio space to work in when the
first blizzard hits!  I also wanted to rescue what is left of
my dining room table from any additional glitter and glue from
future projects!

Armed with hammer, saw and nails, my Thanksgiving guests
(Dad and step Mom)
helped me transform my lower level into the perfect snowy day studio!

We lowered the lumber and two counter tops in through the egress
window.  The lighting is made up of extra curtain rods I had laying around,
bungee cords and clip lights!  I can
move them to exactly where I need them the most, depending on
each project.  The window really lets in a lot of natural light, too.

Now the hunt for the perfect area rug is ON!

My sewing machine is calling me to begin yet another
mixed media project!  My fabulous free Cricut Expression
from ProvoCraft
that I won at The Creative Connection last September,
also has a better home than my table upstairs.  Plenty of
storage helps me keep it all clutter free in between
projects!  All I can say
now is "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow"!!!

The rest of the wood went to good use as these brand new
storage shelves.  All that's left is to hang some cool fabric and
I have a cozy extra  nook for overnight guests in case all
the other beds are taken!

Maybe someday I'll finish this space with drywall and carpet...
but for now, it's just fabulous for my second studio!!!
Where do you like to create?  Dining room table or
studio... please share!
And have a fabulously creative day!

Fun at Starbucks!

Hanging out...

If there's one thing I like most about Starbucks,
it's making memories there with my kids!

Of course that's always easy because my kids are so
"special"... as you can see from the photo above, haha!
While we always have a great time, we also talk, make plans, dream
and sometimes even
do homework.

They entertain me and anyone else who will give them attention.
Another important thing about our Starbucks time is the time
and attention they get from me!  You can tell how much they love it!

The only thing missing from this photo session is my oldest and leader of the clown pack...
who will join us shortly over her Christmas break from FIDM.  I can hardly wait
for that... my favorite Starbucks time is when we're all together!

We always reconnect and have lots of fun
hanging out at our favorite hangout...

Where do you reconnect with your kids?  I love
comments so don't hesitate to leave a quick note!
Have a fabulous day!!!

Rainy Days Painting

I love to paint on rainy days...

Something about a rainy day makes me want to paint.  I love how quiet the
world seems as the rain falls... as if there's nothing to do but stay in
and create on canvas.

To communicate through color... and try new things with paint, crayon and stencils.

To let thoughts and ideas flow out onto the canvas while hiding in plain sight.

Using fabulous found objects, like a vintage doily, to create interest and
draw the viewer to look closer.

And create small paintings within larger paintings...

These are some of the reasons I love to paint, on rainy days
or any days!

What do you like most about painting...
or rainy days...
or both!

paintings by artist Renee Mak and are protected by copyright 2011}

Upcycled Mailing Package How To

Upcycled Mailing Package How To:

Who on your mailing list wouldn't want to get such a
fabulously fussed up package?!?
This how to is quick , easy and fun to do!

1 used shipping box
1 fabulous stamp or stencil
White paint or gesso
Favorite color paint
Matching glitter
Paint brush

First, paint the box/package white.  You can do one or two
coats.  I only use one so that the former life of the
box shows just a little.
Sometimes, while the white paint is still wet, I draw into it
with the end of my brush.  I create hearts, flowers, swirls or
anything else I feel like drawing.  You can see a little of that
in the top photo.

After that dries, I take one of my favorite paint colors and stamp or stencil away!
In this case I used Cobalt Teal and a stencil.  I don't worry about
how neat it looks... as you can see by the paint bottle, I'm a messy painter!
After I lift off the stencil, I lay a paper towel down over the work and then
lift it up again.  This creates yet another textural layer on my box.  I
move the stencil around until I like how it looks, repeating the paper towel step.

Now, before the paint dries, I sprinkle glitter randomly over the wet paint.  Again,
I don't try and make it "perfectly even"!

The random patterns and layers all together make it more interesting!  Sometimes
I spray a quick coat of sealer over it but not always.

You're now ready to pack it up and make someones day!
This little fussed up project is so easy and can be done in so many
different ways.  Just by adding other colors, textures and markings you have
an original work of art... every time.
Not only does it make the receiver smile, but also all of the postal
handlers along the way!
How do you recycle/upcycle your mailing packages?  I'd love to hear
all about it... send pictures too!
And as always...
have a fabulous fussed up day!!!

Blue Mondays

It was so cold when I woke up this morning!
At 19 degrees fahrenheit, the cold hard truth that
winter is on it's way has become shockingly apparent.
So this blue mondays post will be filled with...

blue snowflakes

blue snowflakes!

blue loop snowflakes

I love cookies... and these blue snowflake cookies are just in time for the holidays!

My own Oreo Truffles. Made with white chocolate, blue sugar and snowflakes of course!

Yum...the blue snowflake sprinkles on top of these oreo truffles are making my mouth water!

Now here's a great idea... a blue snowflake wreath.  All that's needed
is a wreath frame, felt snowflakes and a hot glue gun!
With the mercury dropping, I'll really need this
blue snowflake blanket to keep warm!

Speaking of staying warm... I think I'll stay inside today and make
more of these polymer clay blue snowflake ornaments for the tree!

Do you have a favorite blue snowflake idea?  I'd love to hear form you...
until then, have a beautiful blue Monday!
